This is our son Alec with his big sister Sophia. Alec was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome at 7 months when it was discovered he had aortic and pulmonary stenosis, as well as severe hypercalcemia.
Alec was born on March 24, 2007, and has been with Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto since birth. They knew that something was wrong with Alec, most likely a syndrome, but it took a few months and Alec's failure to thrive to figure it out.
Alec is a very tiny, only 21 pounds at 2 1/2, but a very energetic, lovable and happy little boy. He is a favorite everywhere he goes, but the girls on his sister's hockey team are by far his biggest fans. Alec has an infectious personality and everyone just wants to hug him. Not surprisingly, he is quite happy to hug them back, even his doctors.
His heart condition has remained mild, but he is still having trouble with the hypercalcemia and resulting nephrocalcinosis of his kidneys. Because of a hypersensitive pallet, Alec still only eats pureed food. He receives music therapy, OT, PT, and speech.
Alec started to walk at 28 months and is now trying to run. He loves to chase his sister around the house. This year he started nursery school and really enjoys being with his peers.
We live in Markham, Ontario and would love to hear from any families of children with WS.
